President of Guyana Commissions Quarry Project

The construction industry in Guyana has experienced significant growth, so much so that in September 2023, the country’s president, Dr. Alli, commissioned the first phase of the US$10 million EKAA HRIM Earth Resources Management Quarry in Batavia, Region Seven. The quarry aims to meet the growing demand for construction materials in Guyana.

During the commissioning event, President Alli announced that the construction sector, including the quarrying and mining sector in Guyana, saw a 40 percent growth in the first half of 2023. Over the last three years, the government has spent considerable money importing quarrying materials. The project's second phase will commence after 2026, necessitating more imports.

President Alli noted that the project is just the first and second waves of infrastructure investments to meet the demand posed by the construction sector. Once the project reaches completion, it will deliver quarry materials at less than $9000 per tonne to Kingston, Georgetown, representing a reduction of $3000 to $4000 at the time of the commissioning.
